ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sylvia Gortz
Since arriving on the professional art scene, Sylvia’s worked hard to capture and intrigue the art community. She gathers much of her inspiration from personal experiences, the environment, and cultures around her. Sylvia was born in New York. She is a painter/mixed media artist. Earning a BA in Art, from Whittier College in CA, she has been involved in many facets of art throughout the years.
Her love of art continues to play a dominant role as her career evolved from neon artist/artist, to art teacher, visual display, and most recently as gallery owner, art consultant, part time realtor, & “pop up” curator. She has always been an artist, through it all. Serving as the president of the “Art Galleries of St Augustine”(AGOSA) for two years, was a wonderful experience. This nonprofit, is a service organization aimed at artist & art business development. Through involvement in community projects, a publication, Art Walk Guide/ map & regular informal meet-ups. AGOSA is responsible for the St Augustine Art (gallery)Walk, which occurs every first Friday of the month.
Sylvia is influenced by many artists, but the few with the greatest inspiration are Dali, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Lempicka, Modigliani, Van Gogh. Inspiration has come from them, as well as anything vintage and colorful.
“These past few years were a complex mess. In turn, this mess; the quarantine and Covid 19, has simplified life. I am more in touch with the calm, simple aspect of everyday life. Gone is the desire to run around endlessly; errands, shopping, constantly filling the social void. Simplicity has crept its way into my art. Onward and upward with much, much, more to create.”
My art, Pokoj/Peace, serenity of spring and renewal. Glorious blue skies, and a flower bursting out of the trampled dirt.
Many in our world today, don't feel that same peace and serenity that some of us are enjoying with spring. Peace, free from war. Hoping each day that the Ukraine and other war torn nations will know the serenity of peace again, really soon.
